…the DVR box I got from my cable company isn’t ‘smart’ enough to adjust program recording times to accommodate earlier programs that go long? This is especially a problem on the weekends when sporting events go long, and shows start quite a bit after their regularly scheduled start time. Or is it that I’m not smart enough to figure out how to make it do this?

Nope. It’s the DVR. It relies on a published schedule, and does not get adjusted on the fly. At this point, it should be easy enough to publish that information in a little data stream that will update the schedule… But they don’t do it.
I’ve set my Simpson’s schedule to always record an extra 30 minutes, just in case. I’ve been bitten by the sports schedule one too many times. And now that cycling season has re-started, I am going to have to remember to adjust the Versus schedule to record an extra 30 minutes, in case their live coverage goes long.
